From the mid 1950s until well into the 1960s, the BBC produced many series of Sherlock Holmes stories featuring Carleton Hobbs and Norman Shelley, the former sounding to me more like a peevish old man than a great detective. The BBC has recently been rebroadcasting many, and others are on YT, but herewith a selection of my own.

Librivox recording of Moby Dick, or the Whale, by Herman Melville. Read by Stewart Wills Few things, even in literature, can really be said to be unique -- but Moby Dick is truly unlike anything written before or since. The novel is nominally about the obsessive hunt by the crazed Captain Ahab of the book's eponymous white whale. But interspersed in that story are digressions, paradoxes, philosophical riffs on whaling and life, and a display of techniques so advanced for its time that some have...

Brendan Behan an erudite man and no cartoon-drunk, the author would have known that the theatrical form we call tragedy comes from the Greek tragodos, meaning the (death) procession of the scapegoat, and that the audience is therefore an accomplice to the cruelty it depicts. In the fiftieth anniversary year of his passing, in the era of the YouTube universe when videos of state atrocities receive millions of Internet hits, the transmission of his masterpiece is more than timely. The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes "The Case of the Texas Cowgirl" Originally aired November 8, 1954. Minnie O'Malley, a cowgirl in a travelling rodeo, seeks help from Sherlock Holmes--to remove a dead body from her hotel room! Strangely, Holmes seems to be more than happy to comply. Suspects range from a Blackfoot Indian, the owner of the rodeo Bison Jack, and a meek salesman across the hall. Easily the most ridiculous episode of the entire series.
